What is Java?

Java in one sentence

Java is a programming language: a way to write instructions that a computer can follow.

Think of it like this: A program is like a recipe. The recipe lists steps (“boil water”, “add rice”), and the cook follows them one by one. In Java, you write the steps and the computer is the cook.

Where is Java used?

  • Android apps – many apps on Android phones are written in Java.
  • Banks and big companies – the systems behind online banking, shopping and booking tickets.
  • Websites – the part of a website that runs on the server (the “back end”).
  • Games and tools – Minecraft (the original version) was written in Java.

Why learn Java?

  • It is one of the most popular languages in the world, so there are lots of jobs.
  • It is strict: it tells you about many mistakes before the program even runs. That makes it a great teacher.
  • Once you know Java, languages like C#, Kotlin and C++ feel familiar.

How this course works

  1. Read a short lesson. Every example shows the real output it prints.
  2. At the end of each module, solve a few challenges.
  3. Challenges run Java right in your browser – nothing to install.

Tip: Don't just read the examples – copy them into a challenge editor, press Run, and change things to see what happens. Breaking code on purpose is one of the best ways to learn.
