The Lost Treasure Map

Linux lab Intermediate 5 tasks 20 points

A pirate tore the treasure map into pieces and hid them all over ~/island, some in hidden places. Find the pieces, work out which one leads to the treasure, and claim it with the captain's password.

How it works: the terminal below is a real Linux machine running in your browser. Click it and type. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Press Reset any time for a fresh machine. Your password on this machine (for sudo) is student.

The first start downloads about 20 MB. After that your browser keeps it, and labs start in a moment.

Hints

Start with find: it shows hidden folders that plain ls skips.

Solution explanation

find walks every folder, including .hidden-tunnel, and finds 4 pieces. grep -rl TREASURE lists the file that mentions the treasure. ls -a reveals the hidden .captain file, and echo with > writes the claim.

Show solution

grep -rl TREASURE ~/island
mkdir ~/loot
cp ~/island/jungle/old-temple/map_piece_3.txt ~/loot/
ls -a ~/island/cave
cat ~/island/cave/.captain
echo blackpearl > ~/loot/claim.txt
