Options: Find the Hidden Files
Someone has hidden files on this machine. Hidden files on Linux are simply files whose names start with a dot, and plain ls doesn't show them. Use options to reveal what's there.
How it works: the terminal below is a real Linux machine running in your browser. Click it and type. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Press Reset any time for a fresh machine.
Hints
Hidden files start with a dot (.). Options go after the command, before the folder name.
Solution explanation
ls -l shows details for each file, including its size in bytes. ls -a also shows hidden files: .treasure_map in your home folder. Giving ls a folder as an argument lists that folder instead: ls -a ship reveals .captains_log.
Show solution
ls -l
ls -a
ls -a ship
ls -l notes.txt
