What is Python?

What is programming?

A computer is very fast, but it can't think for itself. It only does what it is told. Programming means writing those instructions down in a language the computer understands.

Think of it like this: A program is like a recipe. A recipe says: take two eggs, crack them, stir, cook for two minutes. The cook follows each step in order. The computer is the cook, and your program is the recipe.

What is Python?

Python is a programming language. It is one of the most popular languages in the world, and it is famous for being easy to read. Python code often looks almost like English.

Here is a tiny Python program. Don't worry about understanding it yet. Just look at how readable it is:

age = 18
if age >= 18:
    print("You can vote!")

Output

You can vote!

Even without learning anything, you can probably guess what it does. That is why Python is a great first language.

What can you build with Python?

  • Websites – this very website is built with Python (using a tool called Django).
  • Cyber security tools – scanners, password checkers and scripts that save hours of manual work.
  • Automation – rename 1,000 files, fill spreadsheets or send emails automatically.
  • Data and AI – analysing data, drawing charts and training machine-learning models.
  • Games – simple games with libraries like Pygame.

How this course works

  • Each module teaches one topic in small, easy lessons.
  • Every lesson has examples. Each code box has a Copy button, so you can try it yourself.
  • Under most examples you'll see the Output – exactly what Python prints when the code runs.
  • At the end of every module there are coding challenges. You write the code right in your browser and press Check to see if it is correct.

Remember: You don't need to be good at maths, and you don't need to remember everything. Programmers look things up all the time. The goal is to understand the ideas.
