Patch and Audit the Server
You've taken over a server and need to bring it up to date and take stock of what's installed. Work through a real update, find out what a mystery command is, and record your findings. Your password is student.
How it works: the terminal below is a real Linux machine running in your browser. Click it and
type. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task.
Press Reset any time for a fresh machine. Your password on this machine (for
sudo) is student.
Hints
Update first, then list -u, then upgrade.
--who-owns takes the full path to the file.
Solution explanation
sudo apk update refreshes the catalogue, and apk list -u shows the three packages with newer versions. sudo apk upgrade installs them, after which the list is empty. apk info --who-owns /usr/bin/pstree traces the file back to the psmisc package, and apk info > audit.txt saves the full inventory.
Show solution
sudo apk update
apk list -u
sudo apk upgrade
apk list -u
apk info --who-owns /usr/bin/pstree
apk info > audit.txt
wc -l audit.txt
