Process Roll Call
You've just been handed a server, and nobody wrote down what runs on it. Find out with ps, pgrep and pstree.
How it works: the terminal below is a real Linux machine running in your browser. Click it and
type. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task.
Press Reset any time for a fresh machine. Your password on this machine (for
sudo) is student.
Hints
ps aux shows every process with its user and command line.
Solution explanation
pgrep -c webserver counts the four workers. The USER column of ps aux shows that mailq-runner runs as mail-relay, and pstree shows the workers hanging off supervisor. pgrep -a prints whole command lines, password and all, which is why secrets never belong on one.
Show solution
pgrep -c webserver
ps aux | grep mailq
pstree
pgrep -a backup-agent
ps aux > processes.txt
