Three ways
| Protocol | Modes | Notes |
|---|
| LACP (IEEE 802.3ad / 802.1AX) | active, passive | Open standard, works with any vendor. Use this. |
| PAgP | desirable, auto | Cisco only |
| Static | on | No negotiation at all: both ends must be set to on |
Which combinations bundle?
| Side A | Side B | Result |
|---|
| active | active or passive | Bundles (LACP) |
| passive | passive | No: both wait |
| desirable | desirable or auto | Bundles (PAgP) |
| auto | auto | No: both wait |
| on | on | Bundles (no protocol) |
| on | active / desirable | No: one side doesn't negotiate |
| LACP mode | PAgP mode | No: different protocols |
Configuring it
- Select the members together:
interface range g0/1 - 2. channel-group 1 mode active. This creates interface Port-channel1.- Configure the port-channel interface (trunk, allowed VLANs, native VLAN); the settings are copied to the members.
In NetLab
▶ SW1

SW1#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

| Flag | Meaning |
|---|
| Po1(SU) | Layer 2 (S), in use (U): good. RU = a layer 3 channel in use |
| Po1(SD) | Down: no member is bundled |
| (P) | Member is bundled: good |
| (I) | Stand-alone: up, but not bundled (no negotiation partner) |
| (s) | Suspended: settings don't match the others |
| (D) | Member is down |
Tip: A layer 3 EtherChannel works too: no switchport on the port-channel and the members, and the IP address on interface port-channel 1.
