Nobody can connect

NetLab lab Advanced 4 tasks 30 points

Monday morning, and nobody's Wi-Fi works. AP1 should serve SSID Staff (WPA2-Personal, key Netlab-2027!). LAP1 is a new laptop; LAP2 is an old one with a 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi card. Both have the network saved. Find and fix the faults so that both laptops connect and get an address. Don't replace any hardware.

How it works: this is VulnTech NetLab, a network simulator running in your browser. Click a device in the diagram to open its console and type commands, just like on real equipment (? shows help, Tab finishes a word). Click a cable to inspect it. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Your work is kept if you reload; Reset starts the network over.

Solution explanation

First fault: someone had set power inline never on Fa0/1, so the AP had no power at all (an AP is a PoE device: no PoE, no AP). Second: AP1 used 5 GHz, which LAP2's 2.4 GHz-only card can't even see. Moving the AP to 2.4 GHz on channel 1, 6 or 11 lets both laptops join. In real networks you'd usually run both bands at once (dual-band APs) and steer capable clients to 5 GHz.
