Phone on the desk

NetLab lab Intermediate 5 tasks 20 points

A new IP phone PH1 is plugged into SW1 Fa0/5, with PC5 plugged into the phone. Configure Fa0/5 so that PC5 is in the data VLAN 10 (SALES) and the phone is in voice VLAN 50 (VOICE). R1 already hands out voice addresses in VLAN 50. Also turn on PortFast, since only end devices are on this port.

How it works: this is VulnTech NetLab, a network simulator running in your browser. Click a device in the diagram to open its console and type commands, just like on real equipment (? shows help, Tab finishes a word). Click a cable to inspect it. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Your work is kept if you reload; Reset starts the network over.

Solution explanation

The access VLAN carries PC5's untagged frames; the voice VLAN carries the phone's tagged frames. CDP announces VLAN 50 to the phone, which then asks for DHCP in that VLAN and gets an address from R1's VOICE pool. The port is still an access port, just one with a voice VLAN.
