Lock the doors
The branch router R1 works, but anyone can plug in a console cable and take over. Secure it: a secret for privileged mode, a password on the console, scrambled passwords in the configuration, and a warning banner. Then save.
Use the secret Br4nch!Secret and the console password Cons0le!.
How it works: this is VulnTech NetLab, a network simulator running in your browser. Click a device in the diagram to open its console and type commands, just like on real equipment (? shows help, Tab finishes a word). Click a cable to inspect it. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Your work is kept if you reload; Reset starts the network over.
Hints
Line commands go under line console 0; use exit to get back to (config)#.
If you log out to test the console password, remember what you set!
Solution explanation
enable secret stores a hash, so privileged mode is protected and the password can't be read back. The console only asks for its password once login is set. service password-encryption turned the console password into a type 7 string, which hides it from casual eyes but is easy to reverse: that is why the enable password must be a secret. The banner warns everyone who connects.
