Fix a Broken Service

Linux lab Intermediate 4 tasks 20 points

The reporter.service won't start. Find out why from its logs, fix the unit file, and get it running. (It's meant to run /usr/local/bin/reporter.sh, which exists.) Password: student.

How it works: the terminal below is a real Linux machine running in your browser. Click it and type. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Press Reset any time for a fresh machine. Your password on this machine (for sudo) is student.

The first start downloads about 20 MB. After that your browser keeps it, and labs start in a moment.

Hints

The logs name the missing file; compare it with what's really in /usr/local/bin/.

After editing the unit, daemon-reload then restart — editing alone isn't enough.

Solution explanation

sudo journalctl -u reporter shows the service failed because /usr/local/bin/reportr.sh doesn't exist — a typo for reporter.sh. After correcting ExecStart in the unit, daemon-reload makes systemd read the fixed file and restart runs it, so it starts writing /run/report.

Show solution
systemctl status reporter --no-pager || true
journalctl -u reporter --no-pager | tail -n 5
sudo sed -i 's#/usr/local/bin/reportr.sh#/usr/local/bin/reporter.sh#' /etc/systemd/system/reporter.service
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart reporter
systemctl is-active reporter
sleep 1
cat /run/report
