Names for the branch
The DNS server is NMS (10.1.1.50). Make names work everywhere:
- R1's DHCP pool
LANalready hands out addresses; make it hand out the DNS server 10.1.1.50 and the domain nameexample.comtoo. The PCs use DHCP. - R1 itself must resolve names through 10.1.1.50, with the domain name example.com.
- Add a static host entry
corefor R2 (10.0.12.2) on R1.
How it works: this is VulnTech NetLab, a network simulator running in your browser. Click a device in the diagram to open its console and type commands, just like on real equipment (? shows help, Tab finishes a word). Click a cable to inspect it. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Your work is kept if you reload; Reset starts the network over.
Solution explanation
The PCs only learn the new DNS server when they renew their lease. On R1, ip domain-lookup had been turned off, so without it the name server alone would have done nothing. With ip domain name, R1 tries www.example.com when you type www.
