Time and logs

NetLab lab Intermediate 4 tasks 20 points

Set up R1 so that its logs are useful:

  • Get the time from R2 (10.0.12.2), which is an NTP master.
  • Send log messages of severity notifications (5) and worse to the syslog server NMS (10.1.1.50).
  • Prove it: shut down and re-enable R1's unused Gi0/2, and check that NMS received the "administratively down" message (severity 5).

How it works: this is VulnTech NetLab, a network simulator running in your browser. Click a device in the diagram to open its console and type commands, just like on real equipment (? shows help, Tab finishes a word). Click a cable to inspect it. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Your work is kept if you reload; Reset starts the network over.

Solution explanation

The default trap level, informational (6), would also have sent the message; notifications (5) still includes it because a level means that level and all the more severe ones. R1 takes the stratum of its server plus one: 4.
