Join three sites with static routes

NetLab lab Intermediate 5 tasks 20 points

Three routers in a row: R1 (LAN 192.168.1.0/24 with PC1), R2 in the middle (with a data-centre network 172.16.2.0/24 on Loopback0) and R3 (LAN 192.168.3.0/24 with PC3). All the interfaces are set up, but there are no routes.

  • On R1 and R3: one default route each, towards R2.
  • On R2: a static route to each LAN.

Finish with PC1 reaching PC3 and the 172.16.2.1 loopback.

How it works: this is VulnTech NetLab, a network simulator running in your browser. Click a device in the diagram to open its console and type commands, just like on real equipment (? shows help, Tab finishes a word). Click a cable to inspect it. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Your work is kept if you reload; Reset starts the network over.

Solution explanation

R1 and R3 are at the edges, so a default route towards the middle covers everything. R2 is in the middle and needs a specific route to each LAN. 172.16.2.0/24 is connected on R2, so it needs no route there; R1 and R3 reach it through their default routes.
