IPv6 static routes

NetLab lab Intermediate 4 tasks 20 points

The three routers have IPv6 addresses (link-local addresses fe80::1 on R1, fe80::2 on R2 and fe80::3 on R3 on the links between them) and IPv6 routing is on. Add the routes:

  • R1: a default route ::/0 using R2's link-local address.
  • R3: a default route using R2's link-local address.
  • R2: routes to 2001:db8:1::/64 and 2001:db8:3::/64.

Finish with R1 reaching R3's LAN address 2001:db8:3::1.

How it works: this is VulnTech NetLab, a network simulator running in your browser. Click a device in the diagram to open its console and type commands, just like on real equipment (? shows help, Tab finishes a word). Click a cable to inspect it. Tasks tick themselves off as you complete them; questions are answered in the box under each task. Your work is kept if you reload; Reset starts the network over.

Solution explanation

A link-local next hop needs the exit interface too: fe80::2 exists on both of R2's links, so the address alone doesn't say which one. R2 uses the global addresses of R1 and R3 as next hops, which needs no interface because they are in connected networks.
